Customer service is a hot topic these days, and it seems to hit social media when things don't go well. What is happening to customer service these days? Does lack of training, sense of entitlement or staff shortages create problems? What is our role as a customer when it comes to an agreeable transaction?
The week I decided to cover this topic I had encountered less than desirable service from many companies. It was becoming frustrating, especially when you are in the process of trying to start a small business and it seems no one wants your business!
I am a Generation X child. Yup, I was born in the 60's and we were taught basic manners. Say "hello, please, thank-you, you're welcome", and be kind to others. Why is it when I go in a store, people won't look at you in the eye and say "thank-you" after they have your money? When it does happen, I am feeling like jumping up and down and yelling "yippeee - I just had service from a nice person!" Ok, that is a bit of an exaggeration. When people are not happy with service, they tell the world about it. Why is it that the good news is slower to travel? As much as I had some frustrating experiences in past weeks, or months...years even? Ok, as much as I have had some frustrating moments, I have also met some really great people along the way who cared about their jobs.
I was fortunate to have a couple of wonderful guests on a recent podcast where we had a chat about our own expectations, frustrations and what makes us smile. Honestly this is a great episode for anyone who is involved in working with customers. Whether you are a carpenter, furnace repair person, real estate agent, mortgage broker, business consultant, cashier, barista, day-home operator...the list goes on. If you deal with people and rely on their purchase to earn your living, this episode is worth listening to.
